I was once a loyal Centurion bike fan – now I’m not.

In 2000, I bought my last “real Centurion Challenger” and unfortunately it died last year. I used the bike daily in all kinds of weather without having any mechanical problems. The occasionally flat tire, of-course – but after changing to kelvar tires this hardly happened. Near the end, the bike was so worn down, the gears broke. The repair would cost me close, to what a new bike would cost, so I decided to “let go”.

All this was quite OK, I had got my full moneys worth and had had lots off fun with her. She was one cool bike. The workmanship, quality and value for money was truly amazing – as close to perfection you could ask for.

Now that was then and unfortunately this is now. In April 2006 I bought a new Centurion Challenger at “Sand & Olsen” close to where I live. The price was about dk. kr. 5000,- which is very reasonably for a good, durable and quality bike. Tragically, this bike was a far cry from what I had expected. The bike was/is a disaster financially, due to the massive amount of repairs and total lack of reliability. In effect, I don’t have a bike.

This is a rough outline what I have experienced the first year.

1) Numerous flat tires the first month. I had to change the rear tire to a quality kelvar tire after 5-6 flat tires.

2) Gearshifter, broke three times. This is the cable and mounting that changes the inner gears. This repair had to paid for in full by myself. Apparently it locked-up, when it gets below zero centigrade. It’s too bad, since I live in the temperate zone, where it can get cold in wintertime. But I can live happily in knowing that Centurion bikes in the tropic don’t have this problem. Am I asking too much for in a “quality” bike? My previous bike never failed me in that manner.

3) When bicycling in first gear, the bike had a tendency in going in to “partial free gear”, where the pedals would go round but the bike would go nowhere. I had to return my bike three times to “Sand & Olsen” before the problem was fixed. The total repair time was about a month and I had to go without (again) without my primary mode of transport.

4) The constant doubt if the bike at all was able to get med where I was planing. This worried me and I was in high risk at being delayed due to “bike error”. The bike wasn’t dependable and I had to inform myself constantly about alternative public transport routes. I distrusted my Centurion.

At this point, I contacted the producer Centurion (DanBike) and asked for my money back or a bike that wouldn’t fall apart. I felt that I was being cheated, because the quality was nowhere near the quality one would expect of of a bike in that price range. I felt that Centurion (DanBike) were morally and legally accountable. Centurion did not agree and since the bike was still fixable.

5) The axle between the pedals came lose last month. I returned the the bike to “Sand & Olsen” and demanded my money back. They where not interested in this because this was a new area of repairs and probably fixable. The bike is still at the store.

The only legal option I’m left with, is to make a case before “Forbrugerklagenævnet”. They are a small claims court where you are able to complain over products. This is all very well, but it will take 5-7 months before they are able to deliver a verdict. And still, it’s not sure if “Sand & Olsen” will accept the ruling and then I’ll be forced to make a lawsuit.

I’m utterly disappointed that Centurion are now making subs-standard bikes and in effect overpricing their product. Somehow this seems to defie logic, what they are doing. “Centurion bikes” used to mean quality, value for money, and close to perfection. By degrading their brand – they are cashing out of the market. Consumers arn’t willing to stand for this. I see a future where Centurion will have to charge less for their product and having increasingly a hard time making ends meet. The previous loyal consumers will find good brands and stay clear away from Centurion – no matter what Centurion produces in the future.

It seems that I’m running out of options. The problem is, that I’m very angry and annoyed over this whole affair. Instead of bottling my anger up and having a lousy time – I have decided in using it as fuel for my next IT-project. I bought hosing and the domain www.skod-centurion.info, which basically means crappy centurion in danish. On this site Ive planned to list all of my problems with Centurion and utter my opinion of the product “Centurion” in Danish, English and even German. Hopefully other centurions stories from other x-centurion users will come along. I should have the site up and running in medio June.

I have contacted Fri Cykler and told them of all my problems and hope they are able to help. They are affiliated with “Sand & Olsen” and seem to be the wholesaler. I wrote yet another mail to Centurion and told them of my last problems and my “project”. These are all last ditch attempt in getting what I find fair. I’m not very optimistic and it is highly unlikely I’ll get a speedy resolution in the near future. If aren’t interested now – when would they?

My experience has been gained at high financial cost. Now I’m seriously thinking about giving up using a bike as my primary mode of transport. At the moment I can’t afford a good bike and can’t afford another “Centurion adventure”. I probably will have to use public transport even though I prefer using a bike.

Still I don’t understand why the Centurion seem, oblivious what the consumer thinks about their product. The total lack off understanding and disinterest still has me amazed. I just don’t get it.

Looking at the Centurion site feels me with mixed feelings, simply because of their slogan – “Centurion, close to perfection”. Well I better not get into this topic – I’ll just get angry,…..

There is only one ”great pick me upper” if i feel down. Listening to SP loud, mad and running a couple of km. After that – I’m tired, deaf to the point of bleeding from both ears and overall one happy guy.

Sex Pistols

Sex Pistols are hostile, hateful, hopeless, and full of ”fuck you attitude”. They don’t play that good but they play with an energy that is out of this world.

You should YouTube this: ”E.M.I.”, ”Pretty Vacant” and ”Problems” – they are on top of my list.

I re-discovered “Siousxie and the Banshees” a while back. It happened in a weird way. They had a great song which I truly missed, but the problem was that I didn’t remembered the title or the lyrics. This is not a good starting point. If I wanted to find it again I would have to start somewhere – so I started on YouTube. The odd thing was that I didn’t find it at first after listening to everything on YT. I became a bit worried if it really was ”Siousxie and the Banshees”. The result was that I became a fan or their music, without really finding what I was looking for.

Siouxsie and the Banshees

Last week I YouTubed ”Siousxie and the Banshees”, and long behold the missing long lost video was there. I found out it was ”Kiss Them For Me (1991)”

The video/song is simple, harmonic in a 90′ies kinda way. Siouxsie Sioux (Susan Janet Ballion) is dancing seductively, and nothing else is really going on, besides a lot of slow motion shot. Still, the whole package is highly addictive and work great whit the song. After listening to ”Kiss Them form Me” a couple of hundred times, I’m tired of the song and have gone back to SB other material like “Face to Face”, “Happy House” and “Cities in Dust”.

The whole experience was a bit of an odd eyeopener.

What more can I say… Over’n Out?

Now, in Denmark you have to pay a licence fee (dk: ”licens”) for having a television and radio. The income goes to finance the Danish public broadcasting network (Danmarks Radio). The “licens” has recently been expanded, to also include computers and mobile phones with a Internet capacity. DR has a public service obligation – to inform, cultivate and educate the citizen. This, service obligation is in fact the justification for DR continued existence and financing.

The expansion if the licens is in many ways not just; you are paying for a service you aren’t using (non-tv/radio users). The new licens is priced at about kr. 2000,- annually and will target the people that now don’t have to pay. Students will be hurt hard by this – you can’t study today without a computer and access to the internet.

In the pre-2007 era, you had a chose. You pay, if you had a TV/radio or you go without. Now there is no choice, the licence is mandatory if you have a computer. This is a shame, it doesn’t seem just to me.

DR is a remnant of the old days, where they were “the only show in town”, and has all tell tale signs of an old rigid state monopoly. DR has tried to reform themselves, but they still lack the dynamics you need to preform in the modern media landscape. DR has two TV channels, four FM channels and a range of DAB channels as well. The only truly informative channel is the radio channel P1 (FM).

DR has increasingly come under pressure from a wide rage of commercial channels and has responded by lowering the standard to uphold their ratings. Reality and game shows… basic entertainment without real content. The product they deliver is near identically to what the commercial channels show and it makes you think. You might as well watch some of the commercial channels. DR is in a fix – how far should they go and can their existence be justified?

I understand that we all have to pay for the common good – but do we all have to pay for bad television?

Is TV evil?

I find a bit too much enjoyment in watching TV. It is so easy, to lul down in front of the fluorescent light of television – and time has a habit of flying by… I do not even dare to think of how much time I have spent in front of channels like DR2, NGC and Discovery. The temptation of television is a real problem, for me!

Now let’s just for the fun of it, say that you watch on average of 1,5 hours of TV every day (about average for most people). The tendency is, to watch more in the week-end than the week-day. This ads up to 10,5 hours a week! Try thinking about, what other activities you could be doing? Reading or what about talking with people dear to you. Is watching TV a so fulfilling and important activity for you?! Can this massive consumption of time be justified? Everybody complains that they are so busy: “well do they watch tv?”

I have tried to show moral strength, and various tricks to do something about it. But they did not work. But my last “trick” did the trick! When I moved in my current domicile, I decided to donate my TV to my dear sister. Since I had a tv-receiver in my laptop I thought it would be a hindrance for me thourds watching TV. Well, I still watched some of my favorite shows. The end result, was that I reduced – but still used too much time with the “TV temptress”. I did not go without, but it was a small obstacle. Three months ago, the darnest thing happend – my TV-receiver broke. I had a choice, live without or get the receiver fixed. And I chose the first option.

No, I have no TV problem. The only withdrawal symptoms was that all of a sudden, I had more time to do some of my projects. I am not going to exaggerate the benefits, but feel I more “sharp” and creative in my thinking. These benefits far outweigh the surplus of time. I believe that that far more people doing with out the “TV temptress”.

I suppose that TV ‘pro forma’ has some benefits. The main purpose should be to educate and inform the citizen. But I can’t see this happening – people want to be lulled. Soaps, game and reality shows – are what the people want. If I had a TV, there really isn’t that much I would like to watch (besides zapping from channel to channel)…

The question is, if the “use” of television is harmful for ones mental abilities? And if the answer is “yes”, than it should have some consequences. I believe that TV adherently causes improper and/or excessive use – could even be as negative as passive smoking and other abuses. I would call the “use” of TV, abuse.

If I can’t convince you, take a look on http://www.turnoffyourtv.com/. There is even have a great pod cast (http://turnoffyourtv.libsyn.com/rss), witch Ron Kaufman is the author. He has a very critical view of the influence that the TV-media has on the American society, and other topics like the Irak war, democracy, and current american affair… It’s great and has a sound, and positive message.

I used to have a TV, now I have not.

Christmas blues, too much of everything. If there is ever is/was a false holiday, this has to be it! At some point in history, Christmas had to be more giving experience for the soul. Now, I’m not trying to take the moral high ground. But come on, is this really the best way to celebrate the birthday of Christ? I can just see him, watching down from heaven and enjoying the sight of excesses. Children “coked” out, on copious amounts of sweets and gifts – and the horrible, horrible withdrawal syndromes that follows.

Some get “stressed out” by the expectation of giving the so called “perfect gift” (is truly hell if you have more than seventeen “perfect gifts” to deal with). I’m not going to write about the overeating and drinking – that will just take too much time and make me angry.

I know, I know… I’m not the first person to think this thought. In fact, just about everybody I know talks about it before, during and shortly after. Always in a paranoid and a not so positive way. Afterwords there seems to follow a global collective amnesia about the “hells of bells”. The worst thing of all – no action to alter our course. Everybody seems to forget that there always is a Christmas around the corner. Hmmmm…., I wonder what will happen next Christmas?

My Chrismas was better than i had expected. Our family had come to an arrangement where we all would downsize the “gift factor”. Of course, the small children exempt and got loads of gifts. I suppose we are i the progress of downsizing, hopefully…

I love the Chrismas dinner, being with the family and laying back. But the “gift factor”, just makes me go ballistic. I wouldn’t go so far and say it is a evil holiday, but it has too many drawbacks.

I will wish everybody a merry 2007 and hope we all will enjoy a less consumer orientated Chrismas in the future.

Well, A man can dream…

You guessed it, i’m sick – but still only in the physical since. Friday i started of with a small discomfort and now it has escalated to a full fledged flu. I am hot, tried, cold, snotty, annoyed, lack of focus and most of all – bored out of my mind!!! I hate being sick – the sheer lack of energy and inactivity – it’s killing me!!! I feel like a fish – i have to move or else my gills don’t get enough O2…

Here is a picture of the Hawaiian State Fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa (my kindred spirit?).

Humuhumunukunukuapuaa

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking in my state of inertia. One of my conclusions, is that I have been using far too much energy in looking and seeking for my better half. The last six months I have been dating, a hell of a lot. All the energy, I have put inn really hasn’t trickled in to anything I can work with. I’m a patient guy, but maybe i should focus on other areas that give me pleasure. Let me see – family, friends, law degree, clarinet and so on..

I do hope she is out there but so-far, no good. I dislike my solitude, but I’m still single and dealing with it…

This poem hits my soft spot and is how i feel. From my favorite band…

“Small time shot away” – Massive Attack (100th. window)

Took her in
Dropped a line
Turned me on
(I travel I travel)
We never leave each other ’cause we leave each other so cold
Makes it melt away

The easy part is taking yourself in
It’s wartime every time
Shot away

Wipe the smile from your face
It’s getting in the way
It’s wartime every time
She cut me a line and she turned me on
She made it cool
You couldn’t do it if you wanted to
(Believe me believe me)

It’s wartime every time
Small talk every time
It’s my favourite chloroform
It’s pill talk every time
Get it out the way
Friction wound
Shot away

Ricochet
We’re like identical twins
Sucking on the same teat
Spitting out the same things
(I travel far, I travel far)
It’s wartime every time
Small talk every time
It’s my favourite chloroform
It’s pillow talk every time
Get it out the way
Friction wound
Ricochet

Line’em up and knock’em down
Shot away
A shot away
A shot away
A shot away

Well, must sleep and get well…

A week ago, I wrote a blogpost with the title “www.clearwire.dk = Crapwire!”. I have now, no longer any reasons to hold animosity/hatred agains Clearwire/Danske Telecom. I was angry, now happy…. I removed the post (24/10-06) from my site after I was able to cancel my contract with clearwire and offered a full compensation for my entire period (April/May 2006) to this date.

Reasons and a “short story”…

First and foremost – I removed my post of my own free will and as a sign of goodwill (def. : “An attitude of kindness or friendliness; benevolence”). As did the Clearwire company by offering me, far more than I asked for. For a long period (July/August 2006) onwards, I have had a unstable connection. Some of the time it worked, but repeatedly my access to the web was unstable and at frequent times modem speed (not 1024/128). To make a long story short, Clearwire was willing, but not able to fix it. I had repeatedly contacted to clearwire via mail. I felt that my problems were being (partially?) ignored and there was a too long time delay form the company.

Here in October I had had enough. I wrote a detailed mail (12/10-06) over my problems the last few days, demanded some kind of compensation for my longstanding problems or else… My mail was unanswered. I was to say it frankly “pissed of”. The results was a very harsh mail where I made my situation clear that i was going to make a case made against clearwire/danske telecom. Second, my post “www.clearwire.dk = Crapwire!”. I chose to express my grievances and annoyances by posting on my blog. Some people express there anger by beating old ladyes to a pulp - I wrote a blogpost and a mail.

The day after, I was contacted by Christoffer Castenskiold (Vice President Consumer…) and shortly after by Peter Jerry Sørensen – shortly after thing fell in to place. Here and now i am satisfied by the actions taken by the Clearwire company, especially the co-founder and CEO Peter Jerry Sørensen. Thet have proved by their actions that they are serious ISP. The resolution can be summed up as follows:

1) full compensation + “goodwill”.

2) able to get out of contract immediately.

3) taking my problems serious.

4) showing clear action – not only words.

5) not having to make a formal complaint, and perhaps a civil courtcase…

6) making my bad experience to a good one….

 The end…
