I was once a loyal Centurion bike fan – now I’m not.

In 2000, I bought my last “real Centurion Challenger” and unfortunately it died last year. I used the bike daily in all kinds of weather without having any mechanical problems. The occasionally flat tire, of-course – but after changing to kelvar tires this hardly happened. Near the end, the bike was so worn down, the gears broke. The repair would cost me close, to what a new bike would cost, so I decided to “let go”.

All this was quite OK, I had got my full moneys worth and had had lots off fun with her. She was one cool bike. The workmanship, quality and value for money was truly amazing – as close to perfection you could ask for.

Now that was then and unfortunately this is now. In April 2006 I bought a new Centurion Challenger at “Sand & Olsen” close to where I live. The price was about dk. kr. 5000,- which is very reasonably for a good, durable and quality bike. Tragically, this bike was a far cry from what I had expected. The bike was/is a disaster financially, due to the massive amount of repairs and total lack of reliability. In effect, I don’t have a bike.

This is a rough outline what I have experienced the first year.

1) Numerous flat tires the first month. I had to change the rear tire to a quality kelvar tire after 5-6 flat tires.

2) Gearshifter, broke three times. This is the cable and mounting that changes the inner gears. This repair had to paid for in full by myself. Apparently it locked-up, when it gets below zero centigrade. It’s too bad, since I live in the temperate zone, where it can get cold in wintertime. But I can live happily in knowing that Centurion bikes in the tropic don’t have this problem. Am I asking too much for in a “quality” bike? My previous bike never failed me in that manner.

3) When bicycling in first gear, the bike had a tendency in going in to “partial free gear”, where the pedals would go round but the bike would go nowhere. I had to return my bike three times to “Sand & Olsen” before the problem was fixed. The total repair time was about a month and I had to go without (again) without my primary mode of transport.

4) The constant doubt if the bike at all was able to get med where I was planing. This worried me and I was in high risk at being delayed due to “bike error”. The bike wasn’t dependable and I had to inform myself constantly about alternative public transport routes. I distrusted my Centurion.

At this point, I contacted the producer Centurion (DanBike) and asked for my money back or a bike that wouldn’t fall apart. I felt that I was being cheated, because the quality was nowhere near the quality one would expect of of a bike in that price range. I felt that Centurion (DanBike) were morally and legally accountable. Centurion did not agree and since the bike was still fixable.

5) The axle between the pedals came lose last month. I returned the the bike to “Sand & Olsen” and demanded my money back. They where not interested in this because this was a new area of repairs and probably fixable. The bike is still at the store.

The only legal option I’m left with, is to make a case before “Forbrugerklagenævnet”. They are a small claims court where you are able to complain over products. This is all very well, but it will take 5-7 months before they are able to deliver a verdict. And still, it’s not sure if “Sand & Olsen” will accept the ruling and then I’ll be forced to make a lawsuit.

I’m utterly disappointed that Centurion are now making subs-standard bikes and in effect overpricing their product. Somehow this seems to defie logic, what they are doing. “Centurion bikes” used to mean quality, value for money, and close to perfection. By degrading their brand – they are cashing out of the market. Consumers arn’t willing to stand for this. I see a future where Centurion will have to charge less for their product and having increasingly a hard time making ends meet. The previous loyal consumers will find good brands and stay clear away from Centurion – no matter what Centurion produces in the future.

It seems that I’m running out of options. The problem is, that I’m very angry and annoyed over this whole affair. Instead of bottling my anger up and having a lousy time – I have decided in using it as fuel for my next IT-project. I bought hosing and the domain www.skod-centurion.info, which basically means crappy centurion in danish. On this site Ive planned to list all of my problems with Centurion and utter my opinion of the product “Centurion” in Danish, English and even German. Hopefully other centurions stories from other x-centurion users will come along. I should have the site up and running in medio June.

I have contacted Fri Cykler and told them of all my problems and hope they are able to help. They are affiliated with “Sand & Olsen” and seem to be the wholesaler. I wrote yet another mail to Centurion and told them of my last problems and my “project”. These are all last ditch attempt in getting what I find fair. I’m not very optimistic and it is highly unlikely I’ll get a speedy resolution in the near future. If aren’t interested now – when would they?

My experience has been gained at high financial cost. Now I’m seriously thinking about giving up using a bike as my primary mode of transport. At the moment I can’t afford a good bike and can’t afford another “Centurion adventure”. I probably will have to use public transport even though I prefer using a bike.

Still I don’t understand why the Centurion seem, oblivious what the consumer thinks about their product. The total lack off understanding and disinterest still has me amazed. I just don’t get it.

Looking at the Centurion site feels me with mixed feelings, simply because of their slogan – “Centurion, close to perfection”. Well I better not get into this topic – I’ll just get angry,…..

I discovered Freddie King on YouTube and since then I have become a great fan.We can still enjoy Freddie King but unfortunately Freddie can’t enjoy the physical world. His music still knocks my socks off. If you don’t get a kick from his music you might check if you have a pulse ;)

Same as “Boggie Funk” by King, that i wrote in a former post. It has been removed due to copyright violations. “Freddie King – Blues Band Shuffle”.
Great adaptation of Bill Withers version. “Freddie King: Ain’t No Sunshine When She`s Gone”.
Simple, good vocals and pure King…. “Freddie King: Ghetto Woman”

“Freddie King – She put a whammy on me” Classic Freddie King, Shows that he’s “the MAN”. Just look at the go-go dancer in the back, the clothes….

“Freddie King – Goin’ Down”
– Live concert and great performance.

Enjoy, well do you have a pulse?

Today, I hear the terrible news that the USA has decided to escalate the conflict, by sending 20’000 additional troops. The situation in Iraq is horrible and seems to be going from bad to worse. The vacuum of centralized power has split the country into numerus factions. Irak is a war zone and in a state of civil war.

The Iraqis are without hope. Desperate at the situation, they see the American/Coalition presence as the cause of their inhuman life. The guerillas seem to have no problem in getting support from the population and even the local police. They are being helped with their silence, help, and ressources. The conflict will only worsen, unless the country is stable and find a person or idea to back behind – somehow to find a new common Iraki identity.

The parallels to the Vietnam War are horrific. There military are sending more resources and trying to delegate the military power to the local authorises. The question is how can conventional troops gain a military victory in a civil war, without support from the population? They are slowly getting deeper and deeper bogged down. They won the war but lost the peace. This it tragic for both parties, they are as now doomed to continue the dance of death. More dead troops, more dead Iraqis and pushing the country into further destruction.

The sending of further troops, are just making more potential targets for the disillusion population. Never underestimate the power of hate, it is far easier unite against someone with hatred, than to unite for a common good. I guess what Bush and the “neo-cons” where planing was some sort of nation building. But what do you do with a country that doesn’t have the institutions to handle democracy. Is there hope? There is all ready enough pain to go around and there has to be a solution! Saddam might be gone, but was is really worth it sacifice? Are the Iraqis better of now?

I hope that Iraq gets stabilized and that there can be some kind og peace. I might be grasping at straws, but maybe there is a Iraqi Atatürk? The founder of the republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, was able to reform Turkey to a secular democratic progressive state. His legacy has kept Turkey in the realm of the secular state. Maybe he could succeed where the Americans have lost? I know, i know - I am grasping at straws….

In going to end with a little quote and a picture…

“Oh rational creature,
who desires eternal life.
Here you have wisdom, worth noting:
to properly end your mortal life.
It’s called the dance of death,
which everyone will learn to dance.
For man and woman it’s natural,
Death spares neither small nor great [persons].
In this mirror everyone can read
that he will dance likewise.
Sage is he who mirrors himself well.
Death makes the living [one] advance,
You will see the greatest begin [= lead the dance]
for there is nobody whom Death does not vanquish.
It’s a pitiable thing to consider.
All are forged out of the same material….”

Dance of Death

Is TV evil?

I find a bit too much enjoyment in watching TV. It is so easy, to lul down in front of the fluorescent light of television – and time has a habit of flying by… I do not even dare to think of how much time I have spent in front of channels like DR2, NGC and Discovery. The temptation of television is a real problem, for me!

Now let’s just for the fun of it, say that you watch on average of 1,5 hours of TV every day (about average for most people). The tendency is, to watch more in the week-end than the week-day. This ads up to 10,5 hours a week! Try thinking about, what other activities you could be doing? Reading or what about talking with people dear to you. Is watching TV a so fulfilling and important activity for you?! Can this massive consumption of time be justified? Everybody complains that they are so busy: “well do they watch tv?”

I have tried to show moral strength, and various tricks to do something about it. But they did not work. But my last “trick” did the trick! When I moved in my current domicile, I decided to donate my TV to my dear sister. Since I had a tv-receiver in my laptop I thought it would be a hindrance for me thourds watching TV. Well, I still watched some of my favorite shows. The end result, was that I reduced – but still used too much time with the “TV temptress”. I did not go without, but it was a small obstacle. Three months ago, the darnest thing happend – my TV-receiver broke. I had a choice, live without or get the receiver fixed. And I chose the first option.

No, I have no TV problem. The only withdrawal symptoms was that all of a sudden, I had more time to do some of my projects. I am not going to exaggerate the benefits, but feel I more “sharp” and creative in my thinking. These benefits far outweigh the surplus of time. I believe that that far more people doing with out the “TV temptress”.

I suppose that TV ‘pro forma’ has some benefits. The main purpose should be to educate and inform the citizen. But I can’t see this happening – people want to be lulled. Soaps, game and reality shows – are what the people want. If I had a TV, there really isn’t that much I would like to watch (besides zapping from channel to channel)…

The question is, if the “use” of television is harmful for ones mental abilities? And if the answer is “yes”, than it should have some consequences. I believe that TV adherently causes improper and/or excessive use – could even be as negative as passive smoking and other abuses. I would call the “use” of TV, abuse.

If I can’t convince you, take a look on http://www.turnoffyourtv.com/. There is even have a great pod cast (http://turnoffyourtv.libsyn.com/rss), witch Ron Kaufman is the author. He has a very critical view of the influence that the TV-media has on the American society, and other topics like the Irak war, democracy, and current american affair… It’s great and has a sound, and positive message.

I used to have a TV, now I have not.

1). Freddie King – “Boggie Funk” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2fjpiuwtnM).
This song rocks! I sort of found it when looking for B.B. King tunes. Freddie got his chance and voila. As soon as I’m able to play the clarinet halfway decent, I just might try jamming to Freddie’s tune… ;) . When looking for one thing, I always seem to find something better…

2). B. B King – “Heartbreaker” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChS5XC8clrQ)
Classic tale of falling in love with the wrong woman. I saw “Heartbreaker” on VH1 a while back, and must admit that B. B. is okay. But this is really the only hit, that hits it with me.

3). “The Life and Death of a Pumpkin” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHeI68KFGm0).
Well, the title sort of says it all – doesn’t it? Give it a chance. Apparently it was awarded, winner of the Best Short Film and Best Concept, 2006 Chicago Horror Film Festival, October (Chicago, IL). “A cherished holiday from a new and horrible perspective. Brought to you by Blame Society Productions”.

4). CSS – “Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7agPOt1XZz8)
“Cansei de Ser Sexy” (Portuguese for I Got Tired of Being Sexy), also known as CSS. They are a cool band from Brazil, and where able to break through via the Internet. The tune is a bit quirky, and highly addictive. They aren’t that good musicians, but they can put on one hell of a show. The lead singer “Lovefoxxx” is present in the fullest term of the word and she is “foxy”! Rumor has it, that when they formed the band, the only musician was the drummer. I just love people that are able to make the impassable passable…

5). “Busty Blonde in Bikini with Big Tits” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kps4c9KAJsE).
Well, who doesn’t like tits… (don’t answer that, please).

6). Blueboy – “Remember me” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gQvr2TaHhc)
Wow, i must have danced to this song a millions times. Brings back a lot of great memories… I love this song and video!

7). Freddie King – “Have You Ever Loved A Woman” – Live 1966 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdqFpV1zDUI&mode=related&search=)
It’s a bit funny looking back on this old recording. All you have to do is look at the ensemble. Too bad the sound is a bit out of sync. But great vocal, great guitar – his got the blues… He wasn’t called “The Texas Cannonball” for nothing.

8). The Breeders – “Cannonball” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iK30kW6JssI).
I just can’t get this song out of my head – it has to be the most insanely catchy tune in history? Must be.. Somehow i can listen to this song 20 times back to back, and not get tired of it.

9). Bill Withers – “Ain’t No Sunshine” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHeI68KFGm0).
This hits my soft spot – what more can i say!

10). Buddy Guy – “Sweet Home Chicago” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuRhaDrnlWo).
We all know the Blues Brothers version, but this is far better. It’s live and he’s putting on a great show – the audience loves him. Now it seems to go on forever, but you can’t avoid falling in love with Buddy’s guitar talent. Great stuff…

I’ve become highly addicted to YouTube. For those who don’t know what that’s all about – YouTube is a vast collection of videos – some commercial, but the bulk is ordinary amateurs that have a “wish to share”. It all started just by looking for funny stuff, but after a while I found out that the music-selection was awesome.

Now, I’m very fond of blues, and while plowing threw a whole lot of vintage BB King videos, I stumbled (and fell) over Freddie King – Boggie Funk. That sound almost blew my socks off. It’s raw, direct, and aggressive – in your face.

Well, I must be off. I have a lot of reading to do – enjoy!

“For myself I am an optimist – it does not seem to be much use being anything else.”
Sir Winston Churchill (1874 – 1965), speech at the Lord Mayor’s banquet, London, November 9, 1954

I couldn’t say i better. For me it is the only way. Optimism has to be “THE WAY”, capital lettering always seems so convincing to me. Anyway, you will in fact, be setting your self up for failure. You will meet people who are “wretched and evil” – even worse you might fall in love with them. But the lesson is, that you have to go on. People and the future are good/positive, until proved otherwise. Optimism is a “life force”, like love. It opens doors that are closed. It is the gift that keeps on giving.

Ones emotions are largely determined by how you interpret events to yourself. The greatest gift is happiness, mental surplus and opportunities…

I rediscovered Sam Kinison on YouTube (www.youtube.com), a while back. If you’re looking for raw, “in your face”, “anti-political correctness” stand-up comedy -he’s your daddy. He has to be a über-pessimist”, and somehow be able to transform in to comedy. If you been in a crappy relationship, you can’t avoid to relate to “angry Sam”; he’s larger than life. There is a great site that i have to recommend. It’s “A Multimedia Tribute to the Life and Comedy of Sam Kinison (www.kinison.com)”.

Sam Kinison

It has a great selection of video-clips, but if you need more info on the man Sam Kinison, you better “wiki” it on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Kinison
Back to my main subject – optimism. I’m out of material so i’ll end with a haiku from DA

I.
Star lover’s sonnets
Written for unseeing eyes
Stella never sees

II.
She is not the moon
Forget about your proud lover
You shall be re-loved

III.
The poet-lover
He is not wize in actions
But steadfast he remains

Lets face it the only alternative is self-defeating pessimism.

I have always admired musicians. The ability to make and play music, seems to me to be almost magical – like alchemy. Somehow I had a craving to be a part of the “club”. The only rational solution was to start. Still, I didn’t want to play an ordinary instrument, like the piano, or a guitar. After a while, the only instrument that was practical and diverse enough was the clarinet or the mandolin. I chose the clarinet. If you listen to Clarinet Concerto in A major, by Mozart – you will be amazed how diverse the clarinet can by played. It’s godlike – if you are not touched by this, then you are missing out of another element, that makes life sweeter to live. It hits “my soft spot”!!!

Here is a couple of links to the “godlike”…. It free and legal – enjoy!!

Clarinet Concerto in A major, 1st movement

Clarinet Concerto in A major, 2st movement

Clarinet Concerto in A major, 3st movement

Conductor: Simon Schindler, Ensemble: Fulda Symphonic Orchestra, Clarinetist: Bruce Edwards, and Location: Grosser Saal der Orangerie Fulda.
But still, the clarinet can be used in jazz, blues, rock, and so on. The subject at hand, is too vast, so I better be mooving on…

I began to play the clarinet a half a year ago and I’ve made a lot of progress. This project, is a solo-project – booklet with advice, sheet music and a CD (“Progressive Clarinet: by Peter Gelling”), was my only help. It a bit funny to hear the discrepancy between what you are playing and what you should be playing on the CD ;) – but I can still play a decent “When the Saints go Marchin’ in”. I had reached a spot where I couldn’t move on. My legatos and staccatos really sucked and there where a lot of notes I wasn’t able to reach. Another hindrance is that I have been too busy, with too many things.

Reed 02

My dear dancebuddie Carina, helped me out – hence “my clarinet is back”. All I had to do was to change to a harder reed and improve my breathing technique. She has been playing the last 15 years – and she is still active. Her talent is light-years beyond where I am at the moment. But if I hang in there I might be able to play a decent score. My clarinet gives me a lot of pleasure, it’s always fun to create and progress.

Reed 01
I suppose my greatest challenge in life, is to have few, but completed projects. But to do this, you have to make priorities and hard choices. I have too many project floating around that are distracting me at the moment, but I’m getting closer to my “challenge”.

It’s hard work – but life isn’t easy…

The word divine might be an overstatement, but it’s my favorite website on the vast seas of WWW. If there is a site worthy of such a statement, it has to be DA (http://www.deviantart.com).

I bought my first digital camera a couple of years back. I was playing around with long-time exposure, iso-numbers, and basically playing around with all the functions it had to offer. I didn’t stop there, I also played with motive, light, angles and just having fun taking pictures. I was recommended this site by my dear friend Christian.

There, I found a community, that really gave me a lot of inspiration, for my pictures and after a while I even publish a few on the site (http://cykelmand.deviantart.com/). It was a positive and good experience. The great thing is, that you are able to get feedback, hints and encouragement in this forum. There are even a lot of pro’s, that also publish and are helpful. For me it was a force-multiplier for my abilities as a amateur photographer.

But deviantART is much more than just photography – its a vast resource of creativity. Literature, cartoons/anime, flash and so on. It’s all neatly sorted in categories and sub-categories. Of course there is a lot of stuff, that isn’t that good. It still doesn’t degrade the forum, it’s just different degrees of quality.

I even found this funny little quirky poem yesterday, about aluminium (?!?!):
“Aluminium foil is silver and pretty.
Its not very witty.
Because it has no brain.
Because foil has no brain,
if it did, it might be insane.
Or it might not.
I really shouldn’t judge.”

Discover it on your own terms and you will not be disappointed.

Kudos to you devianART!!!
